Human Genetics Cancer Flashcards
Define Apoptosis:
Programmed cell death/suicide
Normal and controlles part of an organism’s development
Define Necrosis:
Cell death due to damage or disease
Define Cancer:
Diease where the rate of cell mitosis is abnormally greater than cell apoptosis
Mitosis > Apoptosis
Cancer usually begins with?
A single mutation
Why does a mutation occur?
Everytime a cell undergoes mitosis there is a chance a mistake will occur and cause a mutation
Cancwr is most common where?
Where cells divide continiously like in tissues like skin tissue or the digestive tract
Define Tumor:
Swelling
Define Neoplasm:
Tumor produced by abdormal cell reproduction
Define Malignant Neoplasm:
Swelling of cancerous cells that can spread to blood & lymph vessels
Malignant cells usually lose?
Lose there ablity to undergo apoptosus so they cannot regulate themselves so they cannot perform their original function so they function in an abnormal way
Malignant cells grow and multiply at the expense of?
At the expense of other healthy cells by competing for nutrients and resources and starve healthy cells
Define Metastasis:
Malignant cells that spread to other tissues and organs
By invading the bloodstream or lymphatic system and spread through the body
