Skeletal System 7 Bone Tissue Flashcards
Bone Cells and matrix are organized into 2 MAIN types of bone tissue:
Compact Bone
Spongy/ Trabecular Bone
Define Compact Bone
Dense Osteous tissue
Location: Outer layer of bone
Contains: Osteocytes + Calcified Matrix
Define Osteon:
Haversion Systems
The basic functional unit of compact bone
Contains: bone cells + bone matrix arranged in cylinders that run longitudinally
Define a Central Canal:
Longitudinal, hollow tube
Function: Carries blood vessels + nerves
Run parallal to surface of bone
Define a Volkmann’s Canal:
Transverse channels
Function: Connects the central canals of neighboring osteons
Run perpendicular to surface of bone
Define Lamellae:
Layers of calcified matrix
Contains:
Osteocytes
Lacunae: small cavities that house bone matrix
Canaliculi: Tiny canals in b/w lacunae that allow osteocytes to communicate
Define Concentric Lamellae:
Lamellae arranged in rings around central canals
Define Circumferential Lamellae:
Runs parallel to bone surface
Location: Inner + outer boarders of compact bone
The function of Osteons in compact bone:
Longitudinal orientation of osteons provide compressive strength
