Scapula and clavicle fractures Flashcards
Does a scapula fracture require much intervention
No
Tone of surrounding muscles holds fragments in place for healing
How do clavicle fractures commonly occur
Fall onto shoulder
Fall onto outstretched hand
Where is the most common point of clavicle fracture and where are the fragments displaced as a result
Junction of medial 2/3 and lateral 1/3
Lateral fragment is displaced inferiorly by weight of arm
Medial fragment is displaced superiorly by sternocleidomastoid muscle
What is there a risk of in a clavicle fracture
What is the consequence of this
Suprascapular nerves (medial, intermedial and lateral) may be damaged by superior movement of medial fragment Unopposed medial rotation at shoulder results in waiters tip deformity
How do scapula fractures commonly occur
Very uncommon but they indicate severe chest trauma
Seen in high speed road collisions, crushing injuries or sports injuries
