Pathalogical curvatures Flashcards
Describe pathological kyphosis
Uneven vertebral growth in childhood where posterior border of body is longer than the anterior border
This leads to wedge shaped vertebrae
Usual site of pathological kyphosis
Thoracic
May be lumbar
Primary and secondary causes of scoliosis
Primary - congenital
Secondary - neuromuscular disease
Describe scoliosis
Lateral curvature of VC
Consequences of scoliosis
Prominence of ribs and/or scapula which gives uneven apparent length of arms and legs
Severe cases can lead to decreased lung capacity
Describe kyphoscoliosis
Kyphosis and scoliosis combined
Causes of kyphoscoliosis
Asymmetric weakening of paraspinal muscles e.g DMD
Consequences of kyphoscoliosis
Reduced lung capacity
Pulmonary hypertension
Spinal cord compression
What are the pathological curvatures
Kyphosis (scheuermann’s disease)
