Femoral nerve Flashcards
Anatomical course
Descends through psoas major and travels though the pelvis to approx midpoint of inguinal ligament.
It then enters the thigh, posterior to inguinal ligament, dividing into anterior and posterior division.
It passes through the femoral triangle lateral to femoral vessels and gives off articular branches to hip and knee joints.
What is the terminal cutaneous branch of femoral nerve and what does it do
Saphenous nerve
Sensory Innervation of skin over medial side of leg and foot
Motor Innervation
Pectineus,
Iliacus,
Sartorius,
Quadriceps femoris
What is the first cutaneous branch of the femoral nerve and what does it do
Anterior cutaneous branches that arise in the femoral triangle
Sensory Innervation of skin over anteromedial thigh
Why is stripping of Saphenous vein carried out and why is this dangerous
Varicose veins
Long sephanous vein is accompanied by the sephanous nerve which can be damaged in the process
Consequences of damage to sephanous nerve
Pain,
Paresthesia,
Complete loss of sensation over sensory distribution
When is femoral nerve block required
For patients requiring lower limb surgery who can’t tolerate general anaesthetic
For post operative analgesia for patients with a fractured neck of femur who can’t tolerate particular analgesics
Nerve roots
L2-4
What are the cutaneous branches of the femoral nerve
First - anterior cutaneous branch
Terminal - saphenous branch
