Femoral triangle Flashcards
Lateral border
Medial border of sartorius
Medial border
Medial border of adductor longus
Roof
Fascia lata
Floor
Pectineus, iliopsoas, adductor longus
Contents lateral to medial
Femoral nerve, Femoral artery, Femoral vein, (Empty space to allow vein distension) Femoral canal (containing lymph nodes and vessels)
Superior border
Inguinal ligament (ASIS to pubis tubercle)
What’s contained in the femoral sheath
Femoral artery
Femoral vein
Femoral canal
Where can the femoral pulse be palpated
Just inferior to where the femoral artery crosses the inguinal ligament
Midway between pubic symphysis and ASIS
How is the femoral pulse used
Used to locate femoral artery for:
Femoral stab (taking blood)
Angiography (visualising blood vessels)
Clinical relevance of femoral vein
Usually cannulated
What is a hernia
Where part of an organ is displaced and protrudes through the wall of it’s cavity
Describe femoral hernia
Part of bowel pushes into femoral canal underneath the inguinal ligament
How does femoral hernia manifest clinically
Bulge in area of femoral triangle
Risk of femoral hernia
Hernia can become strangulated (femoral canal borders not extensible so hernia is compressed which prevents blood supply) leading to necrosis
