Retinopathy of Prematurity Flashcards
1
Q
Disorder of developing retinal vasculature among premature infants
A
Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP)
early vasoconstriction and obliteration of the capillary network in response to high oxygen concentrations –> progressive neovascularization, retinal edema, retinal hemorrhages, fibrosis and traction –> eventual detachment of retina
2
Q
Risk Factors for ROP
A
transient hyperoxemia extreme prematurity apnea sepsis hyper/hypocapnia intraventricular hemorrhage anemia exchange transfusion hypoxia lactic acidosis
3
Q
eye examination for infants <1500 g or <30 wks AOG
A
4-6 weeks of age or 31-33 weeks postmenstrual age and continued examinations every 2-3 weeks until retinal maturity
4
Q
treatment of choice for ROP
A
laser photocoagulation
