Growth and Development Flashcards
Development is a continuous process and progresses in a
CEPHALOCAUDAL manner and PROXIMODISTAL pattern
Anthropometrics
1-6 mos
wt (grams) = age (mos) x 600 + BW
Anthropometrics
7-11 mos
wt (grams) = age (mos) x 500 + BW
Anthropometrics
1-6 y/o
wt (kg) = age (yrs) x 2 + 8
Average gain in length during 1st year
25 cm
Growth parameters
length/height
ht (cm) = age (yrs) x 5 + 80
ht (inches) = age (yrs) x 2 + 32
Head Circumference
33-35 cm
taken up to 3 y/o
attained 90% of adult head size by age 2
~adult head at 6 y/o
Number of teeth
age (mos) - 6
Suspect thyroid disorder if no teeth by
13 mos
First tooth to erupt
Central mandibular incisor
All primary teeth have erupted by age of
3 y/o
Elicited by supporting the infant in a semi-erect position and then allowing the infant’s head to fall backwards onto the examiner’s hand
MORO REFLEX
NORMAL - symmetric extension and abduction of the fingers and upper extremities followed by flexion of the upper extremities and audible cry
ASYMMETRIC RESPONSE - fractured clavicle, brachial plexus injury or hemiparesis
NO RESPONSE - significant CNS dysfunction
Elicited by placing a finger in the open palm of each hand
GRASP RESPONSE
Produced by manually rotating the infant’s head to 1 side and observing for the characteristic fencing posture
TONIC NECK REFLEX
Slightly older infants
Evoked by holding the infant’s trunk and then suddenly lowering the infant as if he or she were falling
PARACHUTE REFLEX
When the child is supported horizontally in the prone position, the head rises and the back arches
LANDAU REFLEX
Autism Spectrum Disorder (DSM V)
Autistic disorder (autism) Asperger disorder Childhood disintegrative disorder Rett disorder Pervasive development disorder NOS
Deficits in core domains in Autism Spectrum Disorder (DSM V)
deficits in SOCIAL COMMUNICATION and SOCIAL INTERACTION
Restricted repetitive patterns of behavior, interests and activities
A neurodevelopmental disorder defined by IMPAIRING LEVELS of INATTENTION, DISORGANIZATION and/or HYPERACTIVITY-IMPULSIVITY
MALES > females (2:1)
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
