Q

Describe the respiratory epithelium.

A

Pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium (PCCE); Goblet cells secrete mucous for protection, cilia moves mucous up and out

Q

Describe the structural changes as you go down the respiratory system

A

Most cartilage at larynx, gradually decreases until none at the bronchioles. PCCE becomes simple columnar, then simple cuboidal. Mucous cells gradually decrease until none at the bronchioles. Smooth muscle increases to control bronchioles.

Q

What is the function of the pleura?

A

Lubrication to reduce friction (fluid), compartmentalization that allows lungs to function independently, pressure gradient
