Memory and Biases Flashcards
What part of the brain does information need to reach to be consciously perceived?
Cerebral cortex
True or false: all information that reaches the cerebral cortex is consciously perceived
False. Information needs to reach the cerebral cortex to be conscious, but not all information there is
What is memory?
A facilitated pathway of neurons that develops in response to repeated stimuli or pain/pleasure reinforcement
This is where our most intelligent memories are stored
Cerebral cortex
List the different types of memories
Declarative (fact)
Procedural (skill)
Automatic (unconscious)
What is a procedural memory?
Memory of a skill, programmed behaviors in the brain stem; more complex motor patterns in the basal nuclei, motor cortices, and cerebellum
What is an automatic memory?
A memory you have that you’re not necessarily conscious or aware of
What is an example of an automatic memory?
When you see someone after they get their hair cut and you can tell something is different but can’t put your finger on it; their hair is an unconscious memory
Name the structures required for fact memory
Amygdala
Hippocampus
What system is necessary for memory?
Limbic system
What does the limbic system do for memory?
Consolidates the information in combination with something that makes it “stick” like repetition
What can make a memory stick?
Repetition
Emotional response
What influences consolidation?
Emotion
Association
Rehearsal/repetition
What is a facilitated pathway?
Neuron pathway that has a more positive transmembrane potential; closer to threshold
