Hormones to know Flashcards
TRH
Thyrotropin releasing hormone; released by hypothalamus to stimulate ant. pit. to release TSH
TSH
Thyroid stimulating hormone; released by ant. pit. to stimulate thyroid to release TH
TH/T3, T4
Thyroid hormone; released by thyroid to stimulate many processes in the body; maintains BMR, increases heart rate/temperature, increases active transport pumps, increases mitochondrial activity
Glucagon
released by pancreas (alpha) to target liver, fat, muscle cells; glycogen breakdown in muscle, glycogenolysis/gluconeogenesis in liver, fat lysis
Insulin
released by pancreas (beta) to target all cells except neural; stimulates glucose uptake, glycogen production in liver, glucose conversion to fat, amino acid uptake
GnRH
Gonadotropin releasing hormone; released by hypothalamus to stimulate ant. pit. to release FSH, LH
FSH
Follicle stimulating hormone; targets gonads (ovarian follicle cells, testicular sertoli cells) to stimulate production of gametes
LH
Luteinizing hormone; released by ant. pit. to stimulate gonads (ovarian follicle cells, testicular leydig cells) to secrete sex hormones
Testosterone
released by leydig cells of testes to stimulate sperm maturation in sertoli cells, growth and development of whole body
