Autonomics Flashcards
What are the divisions of the autonomic nervous system?
Sympathetic and Parasympathetic
What type of muscle does the autonomic nervous system control?
Smooth and cardiac
What is the fight or flight division?
Sympathetic
What is the rest and digest division?
Parasympathetic
What does the sympathetic nervous system do?
Prepares the body for some sort of crisis
What does the parasympathetic system do?
Conserves energy and promotes sedentary activity
What is the relation of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems?
Opposites of each other
What is another name for the parasympathetic nervous system and why?
Craniosacral; the cell bodies of the nerves are in the brainstem and the sacral area
What is another name for the sympathetic nervous system and why?
Thoracolumbar; the cell bodies of the nerves are in the thoracic and lumbar regions
What is necessary for homeostasis?
Balance of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous responses
Where are the ganglia of the sympathetic division?
Chain ganglia, branching off the spinal ramus (close to spinal cord)
Where are the ganglia of the parasympathetic division?
Terminal ganglia, close to or on effectors
How long, relatively, are the pre- and post-ganglionic neruons of the sympathetic division?
pre- short
post- long
How long, relatively, are the pre- and post-ganglionic neruons of the parasympathetic division?
pre- long
post- short
What is another name for the parasympathetic division and why?
Craniosacral; preganglionic neurons synapse in the nuclei of the brainstem and lateral horn of sacral spinal cord
