Bone repair Flashcards
Fracture that occurs straight across long axis of a bone
Transverse
Fracture that occurs at an angle other than 90deg
Oblique
Fracture that pulls bone segments apart in a twisting motion
Spiral
Multiple fractures that result in fragments between two bone segments
Comminuted
A fracture that pushes two bone segments together as a result of compression
Impacted
A partial fracture on only one side of a bone
Greenstick
A fracture that results in a bone segment tearing through the skin
Open/Compound fracture
This is a result of broken blood vessels in the periosteum
Fracture hematoma
What is direct/contact bone healing?
Process of bone healing where new bone is built directly onto the fracture site
What is indirect bone healing?
Similar to endochondral ossification; healing via a cartilaginous callous forming and being replaced by bone
What is a soft callus?
First step in indirect healing; formed when stem cells differentiate into condrocytes and deposit fibrocartilage matrix between bone segments
What is the hard callus?
Bony callus formed when fibrocartilage callus is replaced with trabecular bone
What is the role of the periosteum in bone repair?
Inner cellular layer is responsible for new bone formation through osteoblast activity
