Hearing & Speech Flashcards
This is the center for speech production
Broca’s Area
This is the center for language comprehension
Wernicke’s Area
Where is Broca’s area located?
In the left posterior frontal lobe, anterior to the precentral gyrus
Where is Wernicke’s area located?
At the left temporoparietal junction, anterior to the occipital lobe
What is the angular gyrus?
A convergence zone involved in reading
Where is the angular gyrus located?
Superior/posterior to Wernicke’s area
What is the arcuate fascilculus?
The band of association fibers that connect Wernicke’s and Broca’s areas
Inability to comprehend speech or speak coherently, but still speak smoothly is probably caused by damage to this:
Wernicke’s area
Inability to produce fluent speech while being able to comprehend language is probably caused by damage here:
Broca’s area
Why might Broca’s aphasia be associated with motor dysfunction?
Broca’s area is located in the primary motor cortex; specifically right-sided motor dysfunction associated with left hemisphere cortex
Why might Wernicke’s aphasia be associated with somatosensory dysfunction?
Wernicke’s area is located in the temporal lobe near the parietal junction; the parietal lobe processes sensory input
Where is the primary visual cortex?
Occipital lobe, just superior to the cerebellum
Where is the primary auditory cortex?
Temporal lobe, anterior to Wernicke’s area
