Protection of the CNS Flashcards
The blood brain barrier cannot stop what?
Fat-soluble compounds–just like the cell membrane
What is the function of the blood brain barrier (bbb)?
isolates CNS neural tissue from general circulation
What forms the blood brain barrier?
Tight cell junctions between endothelial cells
What controls the blood brain barrier?
Astrocytes release chemicals that control the permeability of the endothelium
Where does the BBB not exist?
places where hormones need to enter the blood stream (pituitary gland, pineal gland, hypothalamus)
What is unique about the choroid plexus?
ependymal cells maintain brain-CSF barrier instead of BBB
What are the ventricles of the brain?
Role in CSF production, formed by choroid plexus; 1st and 2nd most superior, 3rd medial, 4th inferior/anterior to the cerebellum
What is the choroid plexus?
Blood capillary in the brain surrounded by ependymal cells that filter blood into CSF
Where is the choroid plexus?
In the ventricles of the brain
