what is the BPS code of ethics?
.a legal document produced by the British psychological society that instructs UK pyschologists about what is acceptable conduct in research

what is meant by cost-benefit approach?
.ethical guidelines are implemented by an ethics committee who weigh up wether the ethical costs can be justified in terms of benefits to society
how is informed consent a way of dealing with ethical issues?
.by giving a consent letter detailing all relevant information that might effect their decision to participate means you can justify that the participants were aware of what they were getting themselves into
what are the 3 types of consent?
.presumptive consent
.prior general consent
.retrospective consent
.what is presumptive consent
.ask similar people to the participant if they’d be willing, if they agree consent is presumed
.what is meant by prior general consent?
.participants give consent to a range of studies, including one with deception, so effectively consent to be deceived
.what is retrospective consent?
.participants are asked for their consent during the debrief having already taken part in the study
.how can a researcher get around deception?
.they can give a ful debrief explaining to the participants :aim of the study, details they were not aware of, what their data is used for, their right to withhold data
.how can the researcher get around protection from harm?
.participants should be given the right to withdraw at any stage
.reassured their behaviour is normal
.researcher should provide counselling if needed
.how can researchers deal with confidentiality?
.protect all data, refer to participants as numbers
