Biospychology: nervous system Flashcards
What is the nervous system?
Primary internal communication system
What is the nervous system based off?
Electrical and chemical signals
What does the nervous system do?
Collects, processes and responds to information in the environment
What is the function of the nervous system
Co-ordinate the working of organs and cells.
What are the 2 body parts associated with the central nervous system?
The brain
The spinal chord
What does the brain do?
.centre of all conscious awareness
.makes decisions
What does the spinal chord do?
.extension of the brain -transfers messages to and from the brain to the rest of the body
.responsible for reflex actions
What does the peripheral nervous system involve?
Involves all nerves outside the central nervous system
What is the peripheral nervous system split into?
.autonomic nervous system
.somatic nervous system
What does the autonomic nervous system control?
.controls organs
.involuntary movements
.muscles
What does the somatic nervous system control?
.controls skeletal muscles
.enables reflex actions
What is the autonomic nervous system split into?
.sympathetic
.parasympathetic
What does the sympathetic do?
.works alongside the endocrine system
.flight or flight
What does the parasympathetic do?
.works alongside endocrine system
.rest and digest
