research methods: experimental designs Flashcards
what are the 3 types of experimental design?
.independent groups design
.repeated measures
.matched pairs
what is an independent groups design?
.each participant only takes part in one condition of the IV
what is a strength to the independent group design?
.lower risk of demand characteristics, as naive patients only do one condition
.no order effects -such as practice or fatigue as they only do one condition
what is a negative to an independent group design?
.individual differences means it’s hard to compare groups
what is a repeated measures design?
.each participant takes part in all conditions of the IV
what are the strengths to a repeated measures design?
.controls for individual differences so psychologist can be more certain that any difference is due to IV
.what are the negatives to a repeated measures design?
.higher risk of demand characteristics than IGD
.risk of order effects
.what is a matched pair design?
.participants matched with another participant who share a relevant characteristic for the study, e.g. same IQ
.then split randomly into different conditions of the IV.
what are the strengths to a matched pairs design?
.reduces the effect of participant variables
.no order effects, such as practice or fatigue, as only do one condition
.what is a negative to the matched pairs design?
.cannot match participants exactly, so individual differences
so still an issue.
