Reproductive System - Male Flashcards
What are the Components of the Male Reproductive System? (7)
- Testis
- Epididymis
- Vas Deferens
- Glands
- Ejaculatory Duct
- Penis
- Rectovesical Pouch (lowest part of abdominal cavity)
What are the 3 glands of the male reproductive systems?
- Seminal Vesicles (produces part of the semen)
- Bulbourethral Gland
- Prostate Gland
What is the Function of the Testis?
- Produce Sperm and Testosterone
Where is the hilum of the testis located? What does it carry?
Located - Posterior Border Carries - Testicular Blood Vessels - Lymphatics - Nerves
What are the borders of the Testis?
- Anterior
- Posterior
What are the surfaces of the Testis?
- Lateral
- Medial
What are the Poles of the Testis?
- Superior
- Inferior
Where are the Testis developed? Where are they located?
Developed
- In the abdomen during the embryonic stage
Located
- In the Scrotum
How do the Testis reach the scrotum after development in the abdomen?
- They descend through the anterior abdominal wall
What is the Tunica Albuginea?
- A fibrous Capsule that covers the testes
What are the invaginations of the tunica albuginea? What does it divide into?
- Septum: divides into 250 lobules, each lobule contains seminiferous tubules which produce sperm
What are the Efferent Doctules?
- Collect the sperm produced by the seminiferous tubule
- Converge in the center as rete testis
What is the Epididymis Composed of? What do they attach to?
- Head: attaches to the superior pole of the testis, directly receives sperm from the seminiferous tubules
- Body: attached to the posterior border of the testis
- Tail: attached to the inferior pole of the testis
What is the Function of the Epididymis? What is it composed of?
Function
- Stores sperm and promotes its maturation
Composed of
- Long muscular tubes that allow for sperm maturation, as the sperm travels through it
Describe the Structure of the Ductus (vas) Deferens?
- Muscular tube about 45cm in length
- Starts from the tail of epididymis, ascends through the spermatic cord, and ends at the posterior surface of the bladder
- Lies medial to the seminal vesicle and dilates distally to form the ampulla of vas deferens
- Distal to the ampulla, the vas deferens narrows again and joins the duct of the seminal vesicle to form the ejaculatory duct
