Obsessive compulsive disorder
What type of disorder is OCD?
Anxiety disorder
What will someone with OCD experience?
Persistent and intrusive thoughts occurring as obsession, compulsions or a combination of the two
What do obsessions comprise of?
Forbidden or inappropriate ideas and visual images that AREN’T BASED ON REALITY
What is an obsession?
A persistent thought, idea, impulse or image that is experienced repeatedly
What do obsessions cause?
Anxiety
Why are obsessions internal components?
Because they are thought
What do compulsions comprise of?
Intense and uncontrollable urges to repetitively performs tasks and behaviours
What are compulsions?
Repetitive and rigid behaviours or mental acts that a person feels driven to perform in order to prevent or reduce anxiety
Why are compulsions external components?
Because they are behaviours
OCD cycle (4 stages)
- Distressing thought (obsession)
- Feelings of distress, fear, worry or disgust causing urge to do something (anxiety)
- Any behaviour to overcome anxiety (compulsions)
- Temporary relief then obsession returns (relief)
Traits of OCD according to DSM-IV
-Recurrent obsessions and compulsions
-Recognition by individual that obsessions and compulsions are unreasonable
-Person is distressed and daily life is disrupted
