What are ethical guidelines?
A set of principles set out to help psychologists behave honestly and with integrity
What are ethical issues?
Issues that arise when there is conflict between the rights of the participants and the aims of the researchers
What are ethical implications?
The impact or consequences that psychological research has on the right of other people on the wider context, not just the participants in the research
What is socially sensitive research?
Any research that might have direct social consequences for the participants in the research or the group that they represent (E.g. leading to discrimination or prejudice)
What is an example of a socially sensitive piece of research?
The Chitling Test
Aspects where social sensitivity has to be taken into account
Research question - what the research wants to find
Methodology - how can you ensure its confidential for people to give unfiltered opinions
Institutional context - will the research funder let it be carried out?
Application of findings (could the data be used to inform policy?)
