presentation notes for reproductive system Flashcards
main organ in male system. produces spermatozoa and also produces testosterone.
paired organ that resides in the scrotom.
testes
tubes in the testes where spermatozoa are produces.
seminiferous tubules
immature to mature spermatozoa
spermatogenesis
Spermatic ducts that contain 3 distinct parts
- epididymis- tightly coiled 1.5 inches to 20 feet. length allows for spermatozoa to mature
- ductus deferens - 18 inches. leaves from epididymis out of scrotom into pelvic cavity, passes over top of bladder; then ends near posterior and inferior side of bladder
- ejaculatory duct; 1 inch long. empties semen into urethra
circular gland just inferior to the bladder
prostate gland
-shaft, glans, prepuce (foreskin)
external male organ
-paired organ; considered a heterocrine gland because produce exocrine (ova) and endocrine products (hormones)
ovaries
fibrous covering of the ovaries
tunica albuginea
egg formation
oogensis
most mature ova reside
Graafian follicles
houses developing oocytes
ovarian cortex
multicellular sacs housing oocytes
follicles
under hormonal influence, follicle ruptures and releases ova
ovulation
called uterine tubes or oviducts; divided into 3 regions
- infundibulum
- ampulla
- isthmus
fallopian tubes
distal third of the uterine tubes. has cone like end. fringe edge of the cone ; along with cilia set up a current that draws the ova into the tubes
infundibulum
middle third of uterine tube. usual site of fertilization
ampulla
medial third of uterine tube
isthmus
positioned between bladder and rectum
uterus
domed top of the uterus
fundus
- endometrium
- myometrium
- perimetrium
walls of the uterus
inner lining of the wall of the uterus
endometrium
muscular middle wall of uterus
myometrium
external layer of uterus
perimetrium
neck of the uterus
cervix
opening of the vagina
external os
connects uterus to vagina
cervical canal
opening from canal to uterus
internal os
thin muscular tube that connects the cervix to the vulva
vagina
superficial layer of the vagina ; fibrous connective tissue
adventitia
middle layer of the vagina; smooth muscle
muscularis
deep layer of the epithelial tissue of the vagina. Makes by transverse folds called rugae
mucosa
recess area at superior end of vagina
fornix
external female organs of the pelvic region
vulva
fatty pad on anterior side of vulva. covers pubic symphysis
mons pubis
analogous to scrotom encloses labia minora
labia majora
area between the labia major that is opening to vagina and urethra
vestibule
homologue to the glands penis . concentration of about 8k nerve endings
clitoris
