Endocrine System Flashcards
Greek for gland
adeno
ductless glands that put product directly to the bloodstream
endocrine
glands put products into ducts
exocrine
both ducts and ductless
heterocrine
chemical signal molecule that has powerful effect on the body
hormone
changes in blood concentrations of something with cause gland to secrete hormones. Ex. Parathryroid monitoring calcium in blood. Secretes parathormone to increase adrenaline.
Humoral
Nerve stimulates glands to release hormone. Ex. Hypothalamus stimulates pituitary gland.
hormonal
pituitary glands, thyroid gland, parathyroid, adrenal
important glands
located under the brain, connected to the hypothalamus . Called the “master gland” because it stimulates many other glands in the body.
- Somatotrophic hormone or growth hormone.
- gigantism or dwarfism
- follicle stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, prolactin melanocyte stimulating hormone, thyroid stimulating hormone, adrenocorticotropic hormone.
pituitary gland
Anterior cervical region, just below the voice box.
-Secretes thyroxin and calcitonin. Thyroxin regulates metabolic rates of all cells.
thyroid gland
synthetic thyroxin helps with hypothyroidism
synthroid
decreases blood calcium
calcitonin
embedded on the posterior surface of the thyroid. There are 4 in total. Secrete parathormone which causes bones to release more calcium.
parathyroid
also called “suprarenal gland” (supra above, renal kidney) there are 2 layers ; outer layer called cortex and inner layer called medulla
adrenal
- zona glomerulosa
- zona fasciculata
- zona reticularis
Adrenal cortex has 3 zones
