Pharmacology Flashcards
What is pharmokinetics
What the body does to the drug
Movement of drug around the body
What is pharmacodynamics
What the drug does to the body
What does it target
What is the response
What are the two things to consider when deciding type of administration of drug
Ease (owners unlikely to inject)
Different onset of activity (oral has to be absorbed into blood first so takes longer)
What is efficacy
The effectiveness of the drug to treat the condition
What is potency
The amount of drug needed to be given to exert an action
What happens to a drug when administered orally
Absorbed in small ingested
Distributed by blood
Acts on target
Metabolised by liver or lungs
Excreted via kidney
How are drugs distributed
Transported in plasma of blood
Free unbound drug is active and can leave blood to different components
Inactive form when temporarily bound to plasma proteins
What are the 4 main targets for drugs
Receptors
Ion channels
Enzymes
Carriers
What is an agonist
A drug that binds to a receptor and activates it
What is an antagonist
A drug that binds to a receptor but doesn’t activate it
When is a drug deactivated
Once metabolised at liver
What does liver do to deactivate drug
Turns it from, lipid soluble to water soluble
By oxidation or add extra molecule
Water soluble so it can be excreted by kidney
