HORSE ANATOMY Flashcards
Why is stay apparatus useful for horses
Standing up for long periods (when sleeping) would require a large amount of effort
Allows standing up with minimal muscular effort
What is the suspensory apparatus
Uses suspensoru ligament that runs along palmar aspect of metatarsals, then joins common digital extensor tendon. Uses sesamoid bones of fetlock joint. Also uses digital sesamoidal ligaments
can resist extension of the fetlock and pastern through the distal sesamoidean ligaments and resist flexion of the pastern and coffin joints through the common digital extensor tendon.
Which limb is the suspensory ligament in?
Forelimbs and hind,imb
Which limb does serratus ventralis involve in passive stay
Forelimbs
How is the serratus ventralis involved in passive stay
they aid in sustaining the horse’s weight when the muscle bulk relaxes.
Muscle contains a tendonous layer which acts a slimg
Helps reduce effort from standing
For the complete function of the thoracic sling, the Serratus is assisted by the pectoral group.
What limb is the check apparatus in?
Forelimb only
‘What does the check apparatus do?
Uses SDFT and DDFT
Resists carpus and fetlock extension without muscular effort
How does patella locking work
Patella fibrocartilage and medial patella ligament lock over medial torchbearer ridge
How is locking and unlocking achieved with patella
Locking—> extension and medial rotation of patella
Unlocking —> quadriceps contraction and lateral rotation of patella
What is reciprocal access and what does it cause
Causes stifle and hock to flex/ extend at same time, so when stifle is locked, hock is also immobile
Uses two tendons: peroneous tertius and superficial digital flexor
