Three branches;
- mandibullar (motor of jaw muscles/ chewing)
- maxillary (sensory)
- opthalmic (sensory)
What is CN 10 and what is its function

Tongue
What is the test for CN 1
Walk past animal with sweets and see if they follow (don’t let them see)
What is the test for CN 2
Menace response (not in first 14 days of life as it’s learnt)
Pupillary light reflex
Tracking an object
What is the test for CN 3
Strabismus- check for normal alightment of the eye
Mydriasis- pupils can’t constrict so are dilated
Ptosis- can’t raise upper eyelid
What is the test for CN 4
Tracking
Extend head and look for stabismus (abnormal alignment of the eyes)
What is the test for CN 5
Check whether jaw is functioning and chewing is normal
jaw tone, muscle mass of jaw
Palpebral reflex- Check blink reflex (touch medial and lateral canthus which should cause blinking of eye)
