Intro To Neuropathy Flashcards
What is aetiology
The cause of the disease or condition
What is pathogenesis
Mechanism/ development of disease
Why might neurones shrink
Ischaemia
Hypoglycaemia
Vitamin deficiencies
Intoxications (cyanide, lead, mercury)
Why do you get swollen neurones
Due to Lysol all storage diseases
What other changes might you get to neurones
Vacoulation of white matter tracts
Atonal swellings
Gills is (activation and proliferation )
Glitter cells
What are gitter cells
Foamy macrophages when necrosis occurs
They engulf all necrotic tissue, which is high in lipidsso the macrophages turn w ]]a white foamy colour
What are axonal swellings called
Spheroids
What is demyelinated
Myelin was formed initially but then damaged, so gitter cells engulf the dead tissue
What is hypomyelination
Myelin was never formed
What is hydrocephalus
Congenital problem
Expansion of the ventricles due to obstructuion and/ or loss of CNS tissue
What is encephalitis
Inflammation of the brain
What is meningitis
Inflammation of the meninges
What is myelitis
Inflammation of the spinal cord
What is listeriosis
Inflammatory disease of CNS
Caudal brain stem is infected
What are some degenerative diseases
Metabolic toxic diseases like CCN
Hereditary diseases like motor neuron disease
Nutritional diseases like copper deficient
