ANS Flashcards
Where does the parasympathetic nerves originate from
Cranial nerves or pelvic nerves
(Brain or sacral region of the spinal cord)
How does the journey work with the nerves in ANS
CNS —> pre gamglionic nerve —> synapse within the ganglia —> post gangleonic nerve —> synapse —> target organ
In the parasympathetic NS, where are the ganglia and why
Close to organ reacting because they only need to create a response in a specific organ
So long pre ganglionic and short post ganglionic neurones
What are the 5 main nerves that have a parasympathetic supply to them
CN 3
CN 7
CN 9
CN10
Pelvic and splanchic nerves
Where do the sympathetic NS originate from
Thoracic- lumbar region
Where are the ganglia in the sympathetic NS
The whole of the body needs to react to situation as it’s fight or flight
So the ganglia will be close to the CNS so the signal can be distributed on multiple organs simultaneously
Short pre gangleonic nerves and long post gangleonic nerves
What is the percentage composition of fibres in the vagus nerve
80% sensory
20% motor
What cranial nerve is the vagus nerve
CN 10
What part of the NS does the vagus nerve for, part of
Parasympathetic
How does the vagus nerve leave the brain
As rootlets from the lateral surface of the medulla oblongata, leaves via jugular foramen
Between CN 9 and 11
What does vagus nerve pick up as it leaves
Fibres from CN 11
What 3 branches goes the vagus nerve give off as it leaves the base of the skull
Auricular branch (sensory)
Pharyngeal branch (sensory and motor)
Cranial laryngeal nerve (sensory and motor)
Where does the vagus nerve join the sympathetic trunk
Cranial cervical ganglion
What occurs at the cranial cervical ganglion
Vagus nerve joins sympathetic trunk, forming the vagosympathetic trunk
What are the four components of the vagosymoathetic trunk and which way do they run
Sympathetic fibres (cranially)
Parasympathetic fibres (cranially) from VN
Parasympathetic fibres (causally) FROM VN
CN 11
