Ligamwnt Structure Flashcards
What is the function of ligaments
Support and controls movement
What are the two types of ligaments?
Splanchnic
Skeletal
What are the functions and examples of splanchnic ligaments?
Support and control viscera (things not bone)
In liver, heart etc.
What is the function and examples of skeletal ligaments
Jones bone to bone (or cartilage) across joints
Two types:
- dense bundle of collagen fibres
- dense bundle of elastin fibres
What is the nuchal ligament like?
Large elastic structure
Has funicular part (elastic cord)
Lamellar part (fibrous septum)
What is the lamellar part of the neck like?
lamellar part is sheet-like and connects the funicular part to the cervical vertebral column only between the 2nd and 6th cervical vertebrae. The nuchal ligament is mainly composed of an elastic-like material
Which animals have a lamellar part to the nuchal ligament
Horses only
How does the nuchal ligament contribute to the head and neck locomotion
By storing and releasing the elastic strain energy, to help pull head back up
Stretches at each stride to prevent head/ neck descending on every stride
Where is the supraspinous ligament
Above spine
Where is the interspinous ligament
In spine
What is retinaculae?
Keeps tendon close to bone and strapped down
Band of thickened deep fascia
Tissue similar to ligaments, don’t serve joint directly
What type of collagen makes up ligaments
Type 3
What type of tissue is ligaments
Dense regular connective tissue
What is the structure of ligaments like?
Collagen fibres arranged in multiple directions, but not irregular like fascia
10% elastin
More cellular than tendons
What are the long term affects of ligament damage
instability, pain, and eventual osteoarthritis of the joint
