Exotic Anatomy Flashcards
What are the four orders of reptiles
Crocodilia
Sphendontia
Squamata
Testudines
What are some examples in the Squamata
Snakes
Lizards
What are some examples in the testudimes
Turtles
Tortoises
Terrapins
What special bone does some reptile have and why is it important
Quadrate
Allows jaw to open wider so that they can eat their prey
How many occipital condyles have and why
Single
Allows for rotation at neck/ head for greater flexibility
How are vertebrae classified in reptiles
Pre sacral
Pre cloacal
Trunk
What are gastralia
Endochondral ribs
Caudal to sternum
Don’t articulate with vertebrae
More superficial that true ribs
Used for muscle attachment and abdominal support
What is reptile bone growth and healing like?
Slow and constant
Epiphyses never close
Very dependent on external factors
How does caudal autotomy occur?
In the middle of the vertebrae at predetermined plates
Contraction of muscle fibres to make spasm
What are some problems with caudal tail autotomy
Lose fat stores
Diverts energy
Tail regrowth is different (cartilage- not bone)
May affect locomotion or reproduction
If tail drops again where will it drop and why
More proximal
New regrowth of tail is cartilage and can only drop where bone is, so will be higher up
What are the types of locomotion snakes use?
Serpentine
Concertina
Rectilinear
Side winding
How many bones are in carapace shell of tortoise
49
How many bones are in plastron of tortoise
9
What are the three parts lf the tortoise shell ,ade from
Epidermal
Dermal
Enchondral
