Performance Enhancing Drugs Flashcards
What’s are PEDs
Chemical substances that when introduced to the body they alter the biochemical balance which can affect the performers ability and give them an unfair advantage
What are the 3 groups PEDs are divided into
Prohibited substances
(Stimulants, narcotic analgesics, peptide hormones)
Prohibited methods like blood doping
Legally prescribed drugs like beta blockers
What do stimulants do
They affect the central nervous system increasing mental and physical alertness and reduce fatigue
What are the negatives of stimulants
They have side effects
They can be addictive and overdose can kill
Mask the sighs of serious injuries
Can cause poor judgment
What can stimulants increase the risk of
Head aching High blood pressure Stroke Irregular heart beat Anxiety and tremors
What do narcotic analgesics do
They reduce the feeling of pain
And mask the pain caused by overtraining allowing them to train harder
What are the negatives of narcotic analgesics
They have side effects And can be addictive The increased pain threshold may lead to further injury or exhaustion Mood swings Drowsiness
What are the positives of peptide hormones
Increased ability to transport oxygen
Delays fatigue
Negatives if the peptide hormone
Heart problems
Increases blood pressure
What do diuretics do
Weight loss
What are the negatives of diuretics
Lethargy
Dehydration
Kidney problems
Muscle cramps
What are the positives of anabolic agents
Aids the development of muscles
What are the negatives of anabolic agents
Heart disease
Kidney problems
Liver problems
Aggression
What is blood doping
You remove a performers blood a few weeks before competing then freeze the blood and the re-inject it this increases the number of red blood cells in the bloodstream increasing the oxygen supply
What are the positives of blood doping
Increases bloood oxygen carrying capacity
Improves aerobic capacity so you can perform longer
