Q

What’s the main function of the cardio respiratory system

A

It enables the body to breath and pump blood and oxygen around the body
It works harder when doing physical exercise

Q

What does the respiratory system do

A

Brings o2 into the body which is used to produce energy and enable activity
Removed co2 from the body which is produced in the musicale

Q

Give the flow diagram of the respiratory system

A
Mouth\nose
Travels down trachea
Into right/left lungs
To bronchioles
To alveoli / capillaries
To lungs

Q

What happens to oxygen in the first 2 steps of gaseous exchange

A

Breathed in and passed through the alveoli and into the red blood cells in the capillaries
Then in the capillaries it combines with haemoglobin which forms oxyhemoglobin
Then this is carried around the body

Q

How does co2 leave the body in gaseous exchange

A

Haemoglobin carries co2 from the body to the capillaries

It’s passed through capillaries to Alveoli and is breathed out

Q

Give four facts about the alveoli

A

1 cell thick
Large moist surface area for gaseous exchange
Numerous capillaries run across for a large blood supply
Bring in o2 and carry out co2

Q

What is diffusion

A

All gases move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration in an attempt to reach equilibrium

13
Q

Why does co2 diffuse from the blood in capillaries to air in alveoli

A

Because the air in alveoli has a much lower concentration of co2 than the blood in the capillaries

14
Q

Why does the oxygen diffuse from the air in alveoli to the blood in capillaries

A

Because the blood has a low concentration of oxygen as it has already been used in body cells so the highly concentrated oxygen in alveoli moves to the less concentrated blood in capillaries
