Definition of motivation
The drive to succeed or the desire to achieve or be inspired to do something
Why is motivation important
It’s essential to sporting success
Without motivation a performer will not have the necessary drive to train and compete
What is intrinsic motivation
The drive that comes from within
They want to achieve because success give them a sense of personal pride
Advantages of intrinsic motivation
Can result in a high level of personal achievement
It’s seen as more effective than extrinsic motivation as it’s more likely to lead to continued effort
What is extrinsic motivation
The drive to perform well or win in order to gain external awards such as prozes thriphies or money
Comes from a source outside the performer
What are the 2 things extrinsic motivation can come from
Tangible objects
Intangible objects
What’s a tangible object
Something you can see and touch like a certificate
What is an intangible object
Something you can’t see or touch such as a praise or applause
Why can extrinsic feedback be bad for a performer
Performer can rely on this motivation to keep going and it can undermined any intrinsic motivation they have as they place more value on what other people think
Can also lead to an unhealthy sense of self satisfaction
