Ascites
Abnormal accumulation of fluid in peritoneal cavity. Need to increase exposure
Abdominal haziness
Pneumoperitoneum
Free air or gas in the peritoneal cavity. Best demonstrated with a horizontal beam erect chest or abdomen
Thin, crest-shaped radiolucency under dome of right hemidiaphragm
Fibrous Adheasions
Fibrous band of tissue interrelates with the intestine creating a blockage
Distended loops of air-filled small intestine
Crohn’s Disease
Chronic inflammation of the intestinal wall which can result in bowel obstruction
Distended loops of air-filled small intestine (cobblestone)
Intussusception
Telescoping of a section of bowel into another loops creating an obstruction
Air-filled “coil-spring”
Volvulus
Twisting a loop of intestine creating an obstruction
Air in Sigmoid with tapered narrowing (creats a beak)
Ulcerative Colitis
Chronic disease involving inflammation of the colon
Air-filled mucosal protrusions of colon wall
Ileus
Nonmechanical obstruction; ususally occurs after surgery
Air in entire dilated small and large intestine with air-fluid levels
