Oral, Nasal Cavities and Larynx Flashcards
Which is the oropharynx, laryngopharynx, and nasopharynx?
What type of epithelium is used by the respiratory epithelium?
pseudostratified ciliated columnar
Where is the respiratory epithelium?
it sits on basement membrane
What accompanies the respiratory epithelium?
goblet cells accompany the pseudostratified ciliated columnar cells
What is this? and what is the type of epithelium?
Respiratory epithelium; pseudostratified columnar cells with goblet cells
What does nasal congestion interefere with?
with hearing, and speech, as well as with sleeping due to snoring
What epithelium is the olfactory epithelium?
pseudostratified ciliated columnar
Where is the olfactory epithelium?
in the superior nasal concha
superior nasal septum
roof of nasal cavity
What does the lamina propria of olfactory epithelium contain?
serous glands
What are the major cell types of the olfactory epithelium?
- Olfactory (sensory)
- Sustentacular (supportive)
- Basal (replenishes other cell types)
- Brush cells (minor)
What kind of neurons do olfactory cells contain?
bipolar neurons
what kind of cilia are in the olfactory cells?
non-motile, sensory cilia
What are sustentacular cells?
Structural and metabolic support for olfactory cells
What do basal cells do?
Replace both olfactory and sustentacular cells
Where does the olfactory transduction occur?
within cilia of olfactory cells
how does the olfactory transduction occur?
- odor molecules bind to g protein couple receptors
- G proteins activate adenylate cyclase producing cAMP
- cAMP opens Na+ and Ca2+ channels triggering depolarization
Why is nasal congestion important in newborns?
because since newborns prefer to breathe through the nose, while breastfeeding they cant do both at the same time.
It may also cause respiratory distress
where do the olfactory cells project through?
thorugh the cribriform plate to synapse with the olfactory bulb
what pigment does sustentacular cells have?
yellow
what are the purple arrows pointing at?
olfactory epithelium
What is Anosmia?
it is the loss of smell
What causes Anosmia?
- severe trauma
- neurodegenerative disease (Alz/Park)
- nose block
- infection
what is the epithelium of the cheeks, lips, palate, pharynx, tongue?
stratified squamous, non-keratinized
