Brain Flashcards
Describe the Cerebral Cortex
Divided into layers:
- Layer = non-specific processing
- Layer = primary processing of information
- Layer = output to other cortical areas
- Layer = thalamic input and relay to layer II
- Layer = motor output
- Layer = output to thalamus
What is the yellow block?

Pia

What is this?

Glia

What is this?

Pyramidal neuron

What is the ventricular system?
- contains the choroid plexus where the CSF is made and later goes into the subarachnoid space
What kind of tissue lines the ventricular system?
simple columnar with ciliated ependymal cells
What is this?

Choroid Plexus
What does the Cerebrospinal fluid do?
- nourishes the CSN
- acts as a cushion
What is the Cerebellums function?
- Coordinate the bodies movement
- To control/inhibit the activity of cerebral pyramidal cells
What are folia?
elevations of cerebellar parenchyma
What are Sulci?
Depressions separating folia
What are the 3 layers of the cortex?
- Molecular
- Purkinje
- Granular
What does the Flocculonodular lobe of the cerebellum do?
Helps control balance in order to remain upright
What does the anterior lobe and vermis of the cerebellum do?
Helps coordinate in order to walk
What does the posterior lobe of the cerebellum do?
It helps with control of fine movements
What are 3 signs of cerebellar disfunction?
- Truncal ataxia = meduloblastoma in flocculonodular lobe
- Gait ataxia = in the anterior lobe
- intension tremor, dyskinesia = in the posterior lobe; occurs due to toxins
Which is Sulcus and which is folia?

What is this space?

Sulcus

Which layer is purkinje, molecular, granular?

What are the two types of neurons that play an important role in neruonal circuitry?
Purkenje and granule cells
What are the 3 types of axons that play an important role in neuronal cicuitry?
- Mossy Fibers = enter from outside
- Climbing fibers = enter from outside
- Parallel fibers = already inside since is axon of granule cells
