Cranial nerves Flashcards
What are Cranial nerves?
They provide sensory and motor innervation to the head and neck
They have both sensory and motor components as a group.
Individually they may be completely sensory or motor, or mixed
What are the sensory inputs to the brain?
somatic = external surface of body
visceral = organs
special sensory = taste, smell, vision, hearing, balance
What are the efferent outputs to the brain?
somatomotor = moving muscles
visceral motor = moving organs
What are Cranial Ganglia?
Are cranial nerves that convey preganglionic parasympathetic fibers to specific ganglia
What cranial nerves make up the Cranial Ganglia?
CN III
CN VII
CN IX
CN X
What is cranial nerve I?
Olfactory
What is Cranial Nerve II?
Optic
What is Cranial Nerve III?
Oculomotor
What is Cranial Nerve IV?
Trochlear
What is Cranial Nerve V?
Trigeminal
What is Cranial Nerve VI?
Abducens
What is Cranial Nerve VII?
Facial
What is Cranial Nerve VIII?
Vestibulocochlear
What is Cranial Nerve IX?
Glossopharyngeal
What is Cranial Nerve X?
Vagus
What is Cranial Nerve XI?
Accessory
What is Cranial Nerve XII
Hypoglossal
What Cranial Nerves are Sensory?
Cranial Nerves: I, II, VIII
What Cranial Nerves are Motor?
Cranial Nerves: III, IV, VI, XI, XII
What Cranial Nerves are both Sensory and Motor?
Cranial Nerves: V, VII, IX, X
What does Cranial Nerve I do?
Special sense = involved in smelling
What does Cranial Nerve II do?
The optic nerve carries special sensory afferent fibers used to provide vision.
What does Cranial Nerve III do?
The oculomotor nerve has General Somatic Efferent to innervate: inferior oblique, inferior-superior-medial rectus. It also has General Visceral Efferent to innervate: sphincter pupillae muscle (parasympathetics)
What does Cranial Nerve IV do?
The trochlear nerve has General Somatic Efferent and innervates the superior oblique muscle.
