Meninges Flashcards
What are the 3 layers that make up the Meninges?
- Dura
- Arachnoid
- Pia
What is the origin of the Dura?
It comes from the mesoderm
What is the origin of the Arachnoid and Pia?
They both come from nerual crest cells
What is the dura?
- Its the tough outer cover of the meninges
*
What is the dura made of?
dense collagenous connective tissue
True or False
The Arachnoid layer is Vascular
False - it is Avascular
What is the arachnoid layer?
- It is a flat layer under the dura
- It contains tight juctions to be impermeable to CSF
*
What is the Pia?
It is a thin layer of neuroglial processes between pia and neural tissue
It is on top of the CNS
Identify A,B,C
Identify the layers of the meninges
What is Meningitis?
When the Leptomeningeal cells secrete inflammatory cytokines and the subarachnoid space becomes filled with inflammatory cells from the vascular system
What are the signs and symptoms of Meningitis?
Signs and symptoms include fever, headache, irritability, stiff neck, vomiting, altered mental status.
What disease is this?
Meningitis
What is an epidural hermorrage?
involves a bleed without going through the meninges or outside the meninges
What is a subdural hemorrage?
involves a bleed underneath the dura and above the Arachnoid layer. (usually a cerebral vein)
