motor control - basal ganglia loop and cerebellum Flashcards
Where does the major subcortical input to area 6 come from?
ventral lateral nucleus in dorsal thalamus
Where does most of your thought come down to?
basal ganglia / thalamus
Where does your thought go to in the thalamus?
ventrolateral nucleus of the thalamus
Where does the basal ganglia receive information from?
receives input from the frontal, prefrontal and parietal cortex
What do loop cycles allow?
you have a thought
send all the info you have to the basal ganglia
to the thalamus
and back up to the area 6
Describe the information loop?
an information loop cycles form cortex through thalamus and basal ganglia and back to SMA in cortex
where is the ventral lateral nucleus?
thalamus
Motor loop
A = frontal cortex neurone
B = putamen
C = globus pallidus
D = VL vetrolateral nucleus
E = SMA
Is the cortex to putamen excitatory or inhibitory?
excitatory
Is the putamen to globus pallidus excitatory or inhibitory?
inhibitory
Is the globus pallidus to VLo neurones excitatory or inhibitory?
inhibitory
Is the VLo to SMA ecitatory or inhibitory?
excitatory
How does the area 6 threshold get boosted beyond threshold for the ‘go’ signal?
when the SMA is boosted beyond a threshold level by activity coming through the basal ganglia funnel
Why are VL inhibited at rest?
the globus pallidus neurons are spontaneously active and inhibit VL
