Staphylococcus aureus and Group A Streptococcus.
What is the first-line treatment for mild cellulitis?
Cephalexin at 500 mg QID for adults and 50-100 mg/kg/day divided q6h for children.
What is the second-line treatment for mild cellulitis?
Cloxacillin at 500 mg QID for adults and 50 mg/kg/day divided q6h for children.
What is the third-line treatment for mild cellulitis?
Doxycycline at 100 mg BID for children > 8 years of age. TMP/SMX (2 tabs BID-QID) for adults and 8-12 mg/kg/day TMP component divided q12h for children.
When should empiric coverage for community-acquired methicillin-resistant S. aureus (CA-MRSA) be considered in mild cellulitis cases?
It should be considered in areas where MRSA is common or in patients with certain risk factors.
What is the recommended treatment duration for mild cellulitis?
A treatment duration of 5 days is typically considered.
