mescaline Flashcards
trimethoxyphenthylamine
mescaline- found in peyote
stress response in plants
mescaline structural similarity
catecholamines
- behavioural reward and or learning
mescaline functional similarity
LSD and psilocybin
- psychological effects similar to hallucinations
how was mescaline used
as a potency measure - other things were compared
mescaline agonist
- serotonin- 5HT-2A
hallucinations: visual (kaleidoscope and cubism) and auditory - norepinephrine- in locus coeruleus
leads to glutamate release in cerebral cortex
mescaline intake
ingested as peyote buttons or mescaline pills (hard to cross BBB but buttons have other chemicals to help)
states of mescaline
1. physiological: sympathetic system (30-1hr) norepinepherine 2. psychological effects (1-2 hr) visual, auditory hallucinations serotonin (?) 3. entheogenic effects- (2hr+) inner peace, tranquility, euphoria dopamine
mescaline tolerance
acute with repeated use
- to hallucinogenic properties not attentional
cross tolerance with LSD and psilocybin (2A receptor)
mescaline tolerance
no physical - even tho targets dopaminergic
psychological tolerance is uncommon
diathesis stress model
individuals who have capacity for mental disorders gravitate towards substances and trigger system that is already existent
therapeutic uses
ability to focus attention and move attention around (norepinephrine)
dopamine might be synthesized from norepinephrine later and doesn’t manifest reward characteristics - no addiction
could be possibly used in ADHD
