remembering, and reasoning– interfere with a person’s
daily living.
Dementia -

Alzheimer disease -
Client opens eyes, answers questions, and
falls back asleep.
Lethargy:
Client opens eyes to loud voice, responds
slowly with confusion, seems unaware of environment.
Obtunded:
Client awakens to vigorous shake or painful
stimuli but returns to unresponsive sleep.
Stupor:
Client remains unresponsive to all stimuli; eyes
stay closed. Client with lesions of the corticospinal tract
draws hands up to chest (decorticate or abnormal
flexor posture) when stimulated.
Coma:
– voice volume disorder
Dysphonia
– irregular, uncoordinated
speech
Cerebellar dysarthria
– defect in muscular control of speech
Dysarthria
– difficulty producing or understanding
language
Aphasia
- rapid speech that lacks
meaning
Wernicke’s aphasia
– slowed speech with difficult
articulation, but fairly clear meaning
Broca’s aphasia
may be seen in clients experiencing stressful situations
