membrane and phospholipids Flashcards
what are the six components of the phospholipid bilayer?
- Phospholipids
- Extrinsic proteins
- Intrinsic proteins
- Glycolipids
- Glyco proteins
- Cholesterol
What is the function of the plasma membrane?
To regulate what enters an access the cell and as a barrier between the internal contents and the external environment. It’s also a site to sell communication and signalling
what are the components of a phospholipid and the characteristics?
-The head of a phospholipid is made of glycerol and phosphate molecules and is hydrophilic
- tale of a phospholipid is made out of fatty acids and is hydrophobic
What is the function of a phospholipid?
To regulate our end is an exits, the cell and make the membrane flexible
what is the function of extrinsic proteins?
help maintain cytoskeleton and act as receptors
what is the function of intrinsic proteins?
Act as a channel for larger, insoluble, molecules and water soluble molecules to enter the cell
What’s the function of glycolipids?
Cell signalling
What is the function of glycoproteins?
Enable cell adhesion with other proteins to help form tissues. They also pass signals through the plasma membrane.
What is the function of cholesterol?
Adds mechanical strength and flexibility
What substances is the plasma membrane allows through?
Lipid soluble substances can go in and out freely, water-soluble cannot
