cell cycle Flashcards
1
Q
what are the 3 steps of the cell cycle?
A
- prophase
- mitosis
- cytokinesis
2
Q
what is a chromosome?
A
a long strand of DNA called chromatin
3
Q
what the structure of a chromosome?
A
chromatin stands and a centromere
4
Q
what cells have 46 chromosomes
A
diploid cells have homologous pairs of chromosomes (23 pairs)
5
Q
describe the 3 stages of the interphase:
A
- Gi: cell growth, all organelle are replicated
- S: DNA synthesis (change the form of chromosomes not the number)
- G2: another growth phase and where DNA is checked
6
Q
describe the 4 stages of mitosis:
A
- prophase: all DNA is unravelled as chromatin, the nuclear envelope breaks down and DNA condenses into x-shape chromosomes
- metaphase: chromosomes move into the equator of the cell by spindle fibers
- anaphase: spinal fibres contract pulling the chromosomes to opposite sides lf the cell so they form chromatids
- two nee nuclear envelopes for and chromatids become chromosomes
7
Q
describe cytokinesis:
A
- the cytoplasm divides and pulls the cell into 2 forming 2 identical daughters cells
