meiosis Flashcards
What are the five stages of meiosis?
-Interphas
- Prophase
-Metaphase
- Anaphase
- Telophase
how does variation occur in meiosis?
- crossing over: were nonsister chromatids become twisted during prophase 1 causing recombination
- Independent assortment: this happens during metaphase , when the chromosomes are lined up on the equator of the cell in a random arrangement, which causes the chromatids to be made of a combination of maternal and paternal chromosomes
what is an allele?
a version of a genr
what does meiosis make?
4 non-identical haploid cells
what is a diploid cell?
a somatic cell with 46 chromosomes
what happens in prophase?
The nuclear learning breaks down and DNA condenses into chromosomes
what happens in metaphase?
The centrioles attach the chromosomes centrosome aligning them to the equator
what happens in anaphase?
- Is it the centrioles contract, making the chromosomes split into chromatids on opposite poles of the cell
What happens in telophase?
- 2 nuclear envelopes form
what is different about meiosis 1 vs 2?
-in metaphase 1 the chromosome line up in pairs vs metaphase 2 where they line up singly
- in anaphase 1 whole chromosomes get pulled to poles but in anaphase 2 chromatids get pulled
