What is halls theory?

A

Halls theory is representation theory.

He believed that the media often use stereotypes which reduces people to having a few characteristics.

Hall also believed that stereotypes tend to come about when there are people in power who are from the dominant hegemonic groups in society.

Hegemonic power - dominant groups in society controlling those less powerful

What is gauntletts theory?

A

Gauntletts theory is identity theory.

Gauntlett believes audiences gain a part of their identity from the media products they consume.

He also believes older media products used to portray very simple stereotypical representations of identity such as gender.

Gauntlett believes that in newer media products we tend to get a lot more diverse representations of identity

What is butlers theory?

A

Butlers theory is gender performativity.

Butler says gender is constructed through performed acts such as females putting makeup on makes them feel more female.

Butler believes that these performances are like rituals / repeated acts.

A

Mulveys theory is the male gaze.

She believes that these performances are audience view characters from the perspective of a heterosexual male, and that these performances are women are heavily sexualised.
