Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Intermediate and recurrent abdominal pain, stool irregularities ( diarrhea, constipation or both )

Abdominal pain, altered stool frequency, bloating
What do you assess in IBS
Pain and discomfort more than 3 days a month
3 criteria: Improvement with dedication
Onset associated with change in frequency
Onset change in appearance of stools
Management and Treatment of IBS
Control pain
Reduce stress: yoga, meditation
Exercise
Meds: Antidiarrheal, Antidepressants
Eliminating irritating substances: caffeine, beans, spicy food, fried food
Add fiber to diet, drink enough water
What medications would one with IBS take
For IBS-D: Imodium, Lotronex and Bentyl
For IBS-C:Linzess
To decrease bloating and gas: Probiotics

What is Celiac Disease
Immune disease when people can’t eat gluten because it will damage their small intestine
Immune system damages the small intestine villi
No wheat, rye, barley
Celiac Disease Symptoms
Acne

What is Lactose Intolerence
No lactose so it is not absorbed, water is brought in and ferments causing bloating
Symptoms of Lactose Int.
Gas, Pain or cramps in lower belly, Bloating, Gurgling sounds, Loose stools, Diarrhea
Tests done to determine Lactose intolerance
Elimination DIY test, try lactase free diet
Standard lactose tolerance test: BG levels are measured before then again at 30 and 60 min after eating 50g of lactose. Blood will be analyzed for lactose malabsorption
Lactose Hydrogen Breath test: Breath samples taken to indicate if malabsorption rises
What lactose containing foods can you eat moderately
Hard cheeses, butter and whipped cream
Have less then 0.1g go lactose
