What is it and where does it come from
Comes from ticks, also known as Rocky Mtn Fever
Ticks carry pathogens in their saliva
The earlier the tick is removed the better the prognosis
How do you remove the tick
Use tweezers to grasp as close as possible
Want to do it as slow and steady as possible to not cause mouth part to break off and stay within the skin
Stage 1
Bulls eye rash, Bright red boarders
Appears within 4 weeks after bite but commonly 7 days after the bite
Usually found in the axilla, groin,thigh area
Flu like symptoms
Stage 2
4-10 weeks after the tick bite
Joint pain, memory loss, poor motor coordination and Meningitis appear
Stage 3
Can be anywhere from weeks to more than a year after the bite
Arthritis, Neuropathy, Myalgia, Myocarditis appear
What antibiotics are used for this disease
Doxycycline
Amoxicillin
If the patient exhibits neurological or cardiac disease= Ceftriaxone or penicillin
What is PTLDS
Post traumatic Lyme disease syndrome
Fatigue, muscle aches, headaches, joint pains, stiffness, mental problems, “brain fog”
May require other therapies- OT, PT, Antidepressants, Antiinflammatory’s
