What is a family
A group of people related together by marriage, birth or choice
May or may not live with each other
Families goal is to maintain functioning , a steady state and to adapt successfully to change
Objective burden
Measurable, disruption of family function, routines and financial costs
Subjective burden
Family perception of what is a burden
Patient not being able to bathe, acting out, sleep disturbance
Purpose to assessment
Determine the level of family functioning
Looks at family history, roles of the family, physical health status, mental health status and family interactions and values
Transition period
From childlessness to parenthood
Can cause excitement along with stress and anxiety
Roles in the family may change, grandparents and siblings
Financial concerns may arise
Pregnancy crisis
Considered a maturational crisis
Common event in the growth and development of a family
A lot of shifts and unsolved issues from the past can cause unequilibrium within the family
Describe a mother in her first trimester
will have feelings of disbelief, breast tenderness, morning sickness and emotions from joy to despair
The mother in second trimester
Mom will feel the best in this trimester
Will be generally excited
Body image changes will develop
Quickening may occur
The mother in third trimester
Mom will feel pride about pregnancy
Anxiety about labor and delivery
Increase in physical discomfort; fatigue and loss of sleep
There will be concerns for the health and safety of the baby
Will seek acceptance of the baby
Partners overall feelings throughout pregnancy
May have concerns for financial stability
Will work more hours to make up for the baby coming
May lack in their role as a parent if they themselves didn’t have a good role model growing up
Partner in the first trimester
Excited and will announce pregnancy to family and friends
Can begin to feel left out
Partner in the second trimester
Involvement increases
Will attend doctor visits
Look back at own upbringing
Women’s appearance will change and may be received differently by the partner
Communication will be important, especially regarding sex
Partner in the third trimester
Couple grows in the relationship
Childbirth classes will be complete
Shopping for baby equipment will be done and room may be prepared for baby to come
Plans for delivery are made
Concerns about sexual intercourse arise
Sibilings part in pregnancy
Responses may vary
Jealousy or fear
Toddlers may revert back to bedwetting or wanting a bottle after newborn is brought home
Assure other children you will still make time for them
Grandparents part in pregnancy
Often the first to be told about the pregnancy
Roles and boundaries should be established to avoid conflict
