Define a group.
COMMON FATE
What is a common-identity group?
attachments members have to the group itself even in absence of direct interaction ex: nationality/ ethnicity
What is a formal group?
assigned by organizations or their managers to accomplish specific goals. Can fulfill the organization or individual functions
What is a common-bond group?
primarily based on the attachments that members have to each other, typically regularly interact ex: sports teams/ family
What is a informal group?
the members’ overriding purpose of getting together is friendship or a common interest.
Ex: Social club at the university
What is a work team?
Well-defined purpose, typically permanent, and usually require full commitment from members
When to use teams?
no individual “experts”, stimulating creativity and innovation, and people feel connected and valued
What is a team?
A small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable
When does a group become a team?
interdependence and relying on each other
What is a self-managed team?
are groups of workers granted administrative oversight for their task domains.
What is a project team?
to address a specific problem, duration to complete a purpose, and members divide time between primary job and various project teams
What is a functional group?
Group members share a common functional expertise or task responsibility
What is a work-flow group?
Group members cross functional boundaries, but share a common end objective
What is a cross-functional team?
are created with members from different disciplines within an organization, such as finance, operations, and R&D
What is a virtual team?
work together over time and distance via electronic media to combine effort and achieve common goals

teamwork, describe how the team will operate
What is the typical group size?
5-8 members rarely more than 10
What is team composition?
the collection of jobs, personalities, knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience of team members
What is collaboration?
the act of sharing information and coordinating efforts to achieve a collective outcome

enable the work group to define, clarify, and pursue a common purpose EX: evaluator
What are maintenance roles?
foster supportive and constructive interpersonal relationships. Ex: Harmonizer

what should NOT be done
Why are norms reinforced?
group survival, clarify expectations, avoid embarrassment, clarify central values
